High Poly Book

During this past 2 weeks I have been working on modeling the skull and gas mask for the head that is sitting on top of the book cover.  I added some ripples and indents to the book to give it some wear and tear.  I still would like to add a buckle that keeps the book closed and maybe has a key hole on it.  Overall, I like the shape of the head and book concept that I have made.

So for my idea for the book concept is more of a radioactive nuclear book that contains like experiments and details how to recreate these deadly diseases and weapons.

I want this type of figure to be bulging out of the front face of the book.  I think it would be nice detail and texture to the book.  Adding some metal straps to hold the book together and other dangerous materials like uranium, thorium and radium.  I still want to keep the book very old but just slowly dissolving or changing due to the radioactive materials it is made from.

Sci Fi Completed

When I started to create this crate, I wanted to go for more of a Halo Reach style of crate, get many small details, and make it more roughed up.  I wanted it to be more of a battle crate and show what the item or weapon is in the holographic sphere in the middle of the crate.  I liked the purple emissive color and opacity of the second crate I had inspiration from and used a combination of Halo and my own style to bring this crate to life in game. I wanted to keep the crate rugged and durable to show that this can deploy in battle games.

Problems and Solutions
I found that the most trouble I was having was making the high poly model overlay on top of the low poly crate within Substance Painter. I was not able to figure out why the low poly crate would not take any attributes of the high poly crate that I assigned to it.  Besides this problem the crate went very smoothly and like how the color and textured turned out in Marmoset and sketchfab.  I wish I would have add a bit more detail to the key pad and handles to get a better rugged feel on the outside of the crate.  Overall, I thought this was a good test of our skills and ideas that we can come up with and bring to life within the games we like. I did find a lot of really nice textures and paints that I wanted to use on top of the crate and I think that with those extras it made the crate stand out a lot better than before when I was trying to create my own textures. Once I have more strength inside of Painter I think that the next project we work on will give me a better chance to understand how the textures really work and move around on the object to give it that realistic look it needs.

Time Frame:
Brainstorm – 2 hours
High Poly Crate – 4 hours
Low Poly Crate – 2 hour
Substance Painter – 2 hours
Substance Share – 1 hour
Marmoset – 1 hour
Lighting – 30 minutes

Total Hours – 12 hours

Sci Fi High Poly

For this week I wanted to get more of the model done and try to decide which crate I like more the sphere on top of the crate to show what is inside the crate.  I still think I need to add some more trim pieces or indents to the crate to give more details.  I am not sure what I would like to add but I do like the lights on each of the crates and might add lights to the spikes I have added to the outside.

While I was working on the crate I found it easier to work on a quarter of the crate to make sure that each side would be identical without having any errors.  I did have some trouble getting the sphere to connect to the cylinder below it but I was able to finally combine and smooth out the corners.  I tried to figure out more floaters or trim pieces to give more detail to the smooth faces of each side of the crate.

I started to color coat the crate so when we do low poly I will be able to choose what gets which material and pattern. Some touch up and bevels added some much needed curvature to the outside of the crate.  Adding lights and emmisive traits will make the rest of the crate light up where light does not fully make it.

3d model of futuristic crate

During this week we needed to find some ideas for the Sci Fi crate we will be starting to model.  I was looking for something that was similar to Halo style of game scene with advanced technologies and futuristic layouts.  I think the model that I found did just that and with a few tweaks I think this could be something I could really loving doing everyday.

Related image     This is not the only idea that I had for this crate, I was also looking at RaventheBird on unreal engine market-place.  I really liked the lights that illuminated the sides of the crates and gave that faint glow on the floor around it.
